Linda Edna's parents are businessman Wayne David Cardellini and Lorraine (Hernan). They were born at Redwood City in California. Linda is Italian (from a paternal grandfather), Irish (from a mother), German and English. Linda was the youngest child of four children in San Francisco Bay, California. She became interested in acting at age ten, when she sang in a Christmas production at school. She went on to perform in school and community theater. She started her career as an British actress in Just William (2010), which was a British show which aired on British television. Following her breakout performance in the role of Lady Rose MacClare on the period drama Downton Abbey from 2012 to 2015 her debut role was in the fantasy movie Cinderella in 2015. James continued to play Countess Natasha Rostova in the television version of War & Peace (2016) and also appeared in a variety of films. These included the action film Baby Driver (2017), the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017), The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) and The Dig (2021), as well as the musicals Mamma Mia! We're Going Again (2019) as well as Yesterday (2018). She was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2022 for her portrayal of Pamela Anderson, the star of Pam & Tommy.
